IPC to Train, Qualify Additional Referees for Powerlifting

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) will be organizing a course to train and qualify additional referees for the Paralympic Sport of Powerlifting.

The IPC course will take place in Surakarta, Indonesia, from 12-14 December 2011 prior to the sixth ASEAN Para Games.

Powerlifting for athletes with a physical impairment made its debut at the Tokyo 1964 Paralympic Games.

At first, only men with spinal-cord injuries could participate, but today the competition is open to all athletes with cerebral palsy, spinal-cord injuries, lower-limb amputees and les autres who meet the minimal disability criteria.

The sport is now practiced in more than 100 countries, and women competed in it for the first time in 2000.

At the London 2012 Games, 200 athletes will compete in 20 medal events.
